A cat dubbed ‘Maverick’ was a stowaway on a lorry that stopped in Perth on its route from South Yorkshire – and animal charity workers wonder if his owner is from the Fair City.
The Scottish SPCA is appealing for information about a tabby and white cat who arrived in their care on June 14, after being discovered on the back of a delivery lorry.
Scotland’s animal welfare charity was informed that the lorry began its journey in Barnsley in England, then travelled to North Berwick, Edinburgh, Kirkcaldy, Dundee, Perth and Glasgow, before the driver discovered the cat on board at Bridge of Weir.
Scottish SPCA centre manager Judy Button said: “The cat is a tabby and white coloured male, who we have named Maverick.
“There’s no way to know which stop he got on the lorry at, he could have come from anywhere.
“Maverick is extremely nervous, so we have been unable to get close enough to locate a microchip.
“His nervousness leads us to think he is a housecat, but we are unsure as he could have gotten in to the lorry while he was exploring as an outdoor cat. Either way we are sure someone will be missing him.
“Thankfully Maverick is now safe at our centre, but we are desperate to find his owner. If anyone who recognises this cat, or has any information, please contact our confidential animal helpline on 03000 999 999.”
It’s not the first time a puss has caught a ride through Perth, though last time the cat bailed out near a supermarket.
Back in December 2019 a cat accidently came to Perth on board a farm trailer and survived for three weeks by making a new friend in Perth ’s North Muirton neighbourhood.
Two-year-old rescue cat Fluffy, (previously called Meg) went AWOL from her home in Kellas, Angus on December 6 after hiding on board a straw bale trailer.
After mistakenly hitching a 30-mile ride as the open-sided trailer passed through Perth ’s Dunkeld Road near Asda, Fluffy decided she’d had enough.
A motorist driving just behind saw the cat jump off, dodge cars and disappear among the houses.
Katie McCandless-Thomas, of the social media page Missing Pets Perth and Kinross, successfully tracked down the cat’s owners and over the next few weeks located a man who was feeding a cat of the same description.
When volunteers knocked on his door in North Muirton on December 30, he offered to keep Fluffy in next time she ventured inside for food.
Fluffy’s family did not have to wait long for their reunion as she stopped in for a meal on December 31.
She was put in a basket and was back home with her owners in Kellas in time for the bells.
