Matthew Stafford’s Week 9 status could be impacted by Green Bay weather

Matthew Stafford’s status for Week 9 is very much uncertain after he suffered a sprained UCL in his right thumb during Sunday’s loss to the Cowboys. The Rams are taking it a day at a time with their veteran quarterback, not ruling out any possibility – from him playing this week to a potential stint on injured reserve.

What won’t help his chances of playing this weekend is the weather in Green Bay. It’s supposed to be in the mid-40s with a chance of showers on Sunday when the Rams face the Packers, which is much different than the perfect conditions the Rams have played in at SoFi Stadium and AT&T Stadium the last four weeks.

Sean McVay acknowledged on Monday that the weather in Green Bay could make it more difficult for Stafford to grip the ball and play.

“Oh yeah, all those things are (in) consideration. What’s the weather supposed to be like?” McVay asked, to which a reporter replied in the 30s. “Oh, baby. So yeah, all those things are things that are absolutely of consideration for us. I think what you have to do, especially just given the uncertainty of it, let’s get our ducks in a row. Let’s figure out exactly what that looks like and let’s plan on if we get him, that’s a great thing and we’ll take it a day at a time.”

Stafford is as tough a player as there is in the NFL but not even he can play through an injury like this if he can’t grip the football well enough to throw it. In the event that Stafford can’t play, it’ll be Brett Rypien at quarterback again for Los Angeles this weekend.
