Martin Lewis issues warning to mobile customers who 'need to move' as provider closes down

Martin Lewis has issued a warning to some Plusnet Mobile customers that they should start looking for a new provider with theirs set to close down in the "coming months".

Plusnet Mobile is joining forces with EE, meaning that it has stopped offering Plusnet SIM only plans and those with Plusnet SIM cards will no longer be able to use them after the closing date. The MoneySavingExpert founder shared the news on Twitter, urging followers: "Are you a Plusnet mobile SIM card customer? If so, it's closing down and you'll need to move."

The mobile network only offered SIM cards, so when it closes users will not be able to use their SIMs to make calls, send texts or access the internet. Customers will also lose their phone number, unless they take steps to switch provider before the closure takes place., warns Money Saving Expert.

The Chronicle Live reports that Plusnet confirmed that customers can currently continue to use their phones as normal saying that customers will be "the first to know" the exact date that their SIMS will stop working. The provider added that Plusnet's broadband and home services will not be affected by the closure.

All Plusnet Mobile users will be able to switch to another provider free of charge, even if you are mid-contract, with Plusnet currently offering existing customers exclusive EE SIM-only deals starting from £8 a month. However, Money Saving Expert cautioned mobile users to shop around and compare prices before committing to a new provider.

If you want to keep your current mobile number when you switch, you will first need to request a switching code by text by messaging 'PAC' for free to 65075. You will then be sent your 'porting authorisation code', which will allow you to keep your number with your new provider.

If you're a Plusnet customer, you can find out more details about your contract and any outstanding charges to pay by texting 'INFO' to 85075, calling Plusnet for free on 500 from your Plusnet mobile, or on 0800 079 1133 from any other mobile. You can also find more details and frequently asked questions about the closure on the Plusnet website.
