Martin Lewis was forced to respond to "hard comments" about benefit claimants after sharing an update on the Government cost of living payments.
The Government has now announced the payment date of the first instalment of the £900 cost of living payment, which is to start to be paid to those eligible from April 25.
The MoneySavingExpert.com founder often shares these kinds of updates with his followers and did so yesterday.
In a tweet, Martin said: "The first instalment of the next cost of living payment for those on benefits (Eng, Scot, Wales & NI) will start hitting bank accounts from 25 April, with most payments made by 17 May."
However, the consumer rights guru received several comments from people expressing dismay around the support payments and the people who are able to get them.
These tweets forced Martin to address the comments in a follow up message during his followers not fall into a "us v them" debate.
He tweeted: "A few hard comments about the benefits cost of living payments.
"Remember 40% of people on UC work. Many who don't are due to disability, illness, or caring responsibility.
"Some in the middle need help too (why I campaigned for energy price not to rise) but don't make it 'us v em'"
The £900 cost of living payment is paid by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and HMRC to those claiming benefits such as Universal Credit, income-based JSA, income-related ESA, Income Support, Pension Credit, or tax credits.
The money aims to help those who are considered most vulnerable with the rising cost of living.
Many applauded Martin for calling out those sharing criticisms about those receiving the support cash.
A Citizens Advice centre in Broxtowe tweeted: "Well said Martin. It seems like the current level of national debate from people who should know better is fuelling this division."
Another Twitter user added: "Well said Martin, shame the current government does all it can to make it sound like every benefits claimant is an illegitimate scrounger"
Another said: "People who moan about welfare have never needed it. It can happen to anyone. All it takes is an unexpected turn of events in life."
