Martin Lewis fan explains how they won £12,500 and says 'it could happen to you'

A Martin Lewis fan has shared how she won £12,500 after entering a competition she saw on the MoneySavingExpert website.

Under the username Becks171, a woman posted on the MSE forum that she had won the large sum of money after entering a radio competition that she saw on the platform.

She thanked another user, named Comping_Rich for advertising the competition.

"I received a call from Absolute Radio telling me I'd won the 'Summer Payday' £12,500," she explained.

"A huge thank you to MSE Forum user Comping_Rich for posting the daily amounts - and a note to anyone who is sick of entering: keep it up, it can totally happen for you too."

With millions of visitors each year, one of the most active message boards of the MSE Forum is Competitions Time.

Here, regulars and newbies alike post free-to-enter competitions, chat about tactics and share their wins.

This includes a range of competitions from those that can be entered by post, phone and text or ones that occur on a regular basis.

The board can be found under the "Hobbies and Leisure" section of the MSE Forum.

Not all competition are free to enter - so always read the terms and conditions carefully and try to stick to free ones when possible.

And of course - there is never any guarantee that you'll win.

Others on the forum have congratulated Becks171 for her success.

One user called Borefest said: “Wow fabulous enjoy every penny, great to see someone win on here.”

The person who posted the competition, Comping_Rich, responded: “Congratulations nice that someone from MSE has won early on, let’s hope we have more MSE winners on this.”

The victory was listed as the MoneySavingExpert newsletter "success of the week".

In 2019, Martin Lewis explained to viewers of the Martin Lewis Money Show that "comping is doing competitions as a hobby to win cash”.

Free competitions are offered by brands to get their names out there and the idea it to get as many possible people to enter.

Martin Lewis told his viewers that he knew one lady, named Barbara, who had made more than £75,000 in cash from comping.

For anyone looking to get started, here are Martin and comping queen Barbara's top tips:

  • Use a generic email address - one you don't use for anything else and could be male or female

  • Only enter for what you want to win

  • You've got to do 100 a week - if you want to win one

  • Keep track of the competitions you enter so you don't enter more than once by mistake and invalidate both entries

  • Think about a competitions 'bat-phone' - that's one that you only use for competitions with a pay as you go Sim card for people to ring you on

  • Make sure your firewall is up to date and you have up to date virus software
