Drivers are being urged to be prepared following the launch of the Clean Air Zone in Newcastle. The zone will see high polluting taxis, buses, coaches and HGVs face charges to drive into the zone.
Fees will start at £12.50 per day for non-compliant taxis, private hire vehicles and minibuses, whilst non-compliant HGVs, buses and coaches can expect to pay £50 per day. The charge runs from midnight to midnight, meaning you can leave and re-enter as many times as you need over the day under one charge.
From July 2023, vans and light goods vehicles will also have to pay a £12.50 charge per day. However, day-to-day non-commercial car users do not have to pay a charge under the Clean Air Zone.

The Clean Air Zone covers most of Newcastle City Centre as well as routes over the Tyne, Swing, High Level and Redheugh bridges. There are more than 40 signposts to alert drivers that they are about to enter the zone to help to avoid accidental entries.
If you accidentally enter the Clean Air Zone, a charge will still apply. You will have six days after your journey to pay the fee after this, a penalty charge notice from the local authority may be issued to you.
