Manipur IPS officer uses cops for domestic chores, suspended

IMPHAL: An IPS officer was suspended for allegedly employing policemen for personal work at his private residence and using his office truck for ferrying house construction materials, even as chief minister N Biren Singh warned the police top brass to refrain from such acts.

PG Singsit, the commandant of 7 BN Manipur Rifles, was suspended by an order issued by the Manipur personnel and administrative reforms department on Tuesday “in exercise of the powers conferred by Rule 3 (1) (a) of the AIS (Discipline and Appeal) Rules 1969.”

Chief minister N Biren Singh on Wednesday issued a stern warning to police officers found utilizing police personnel over and above their assigned official duties at their residences. “This is inhuman. I strongly condemn such acts of using sepoys as masons and other domestic work. I will not tolerate such acts,” said Biren, who also holds the home portfolio.

At a media conference held at his office complex, Biren said he had received reports of senior officers misusing lower-rank personnel.

To ascertain the truth, he convened a meeting with top police officials and an IAS officer on Tuesday and raids were conducted simultaneously at three locations, including the residence and battalion headquarters of the IPS officer.

The findings gathered during the raid revealed that police personnel were being used beyond the rules by the officer, said Biren. According to the findings, some personnel of the unit were found working as masons and sadly one of them received head injury while unloading stones, Biren added.

It was also found that the battalion’s vehicle, a truck, was used to carry stones and sand for the purpose of constructing the officer’s private residence.

The CM said an inquiry would be conducted at the highest level to take necessary legal action against the officer. He added that a chargesheet would be framed and if required, the matter would be intimated to the home ministry.
