Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes sends warning to dressing room after Liverpool defeat

Bruno Fernandes has warned Manchester United's defeat against Liverpool has the potential to be 'psychologically damaging'.

United suffered heavy defeats against Brentford and Manchester City earlier in the season and it seemed such losses were behind Erik ten Hag's improving side, but Sunday's performance against Liverpool at Anfield was a reality check.

After trailing 1-0 at half-time thanks to a goal from Cody Gakpo, who Ten Hag wanted to sign in the summer transfer window, United conceded six goals in the second half to suffer the worst loss in the club's history against Liverpool.

Ten Hag branded the display as 'unprofessional' after the full-time whistle and Fernandes also did a post-match interview.

With plenty of football still yet to be played this season, the midfielder was asked whether the result had the potential to be psychologically damaging and he responded by outlining the importance of bouncing back.

"It can be [psychologically damaging] because we have a game on Thursday and the games are coming quickly. We had setbacks in the past and we have to come back again because this is what Manchester United is about," Fernandes told Sky Sports.

"We can go down but we have to get back because we know how good we are and today we didn't perform. This team is really good and this team can do really good things but today was not the case and I'm sure we can still do great things.

"Together with the fans, I have to appreciate their support at the end of the game, even in a game like this when you lose against your biggest rival and after the final, when everybody was happy, it was really good to be together.

"We have to set a good, really high standard and we have to get back to that. The fans deserve that, we deserve that and we have come a long way, to be here today, the position we are and we're still in the Europa League, the FA Cup.

"We won the Carabao Cup, so this team has to get back and understand we will do much better in the future."
