Manchester United 'make left-back decision' ahead of January transfer window

Manchester United are set to extend Harry Amass’ contract ahead of the January transfer window.

The Red Devils are short on senior left-back options, particularly after Patrick Dorgu’s injury scare on international duty with Denmark earlier this week.

The former Lecce man has been the go-to backup to Luke Shaw when the No23 has been sidelined this term, and Michael Carrick has found himself lacking in depth at full-back.

Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui, natural right-backs, have both filled in in that position before, but now it appears that United are set to hand Amass, the academy graduate, fresh terms in a bid to shore up their left flank.

The 19-year-old looked set to depart Old Trafford in the summer, with Burnley reportedly interested in a permanent move after the young defender had had loan spells at Sheffield Wednesday and Norwich City.

Now, the Manchester Evening News claims that he could be set to extend his stay at his boyhood club, with United set to trigger a 12-month extension clause in his current contract.

Left-back has been a problem position for United throughout the start of the new season, and that issue was on full display when Shaw was ruled out for a number of games with a thigh problem.

Dorgu filled in in his place, playing in the 4-0 Champions League win over Sabah and the 1-0 Manchester derby defeat against Manchester City before Mazraoui slotted in in the 3-2 home defeat by Brighton in the Carabao Cup.

United sit 12th in the Premier League table following their 1-1 draw at Fulham, where Shaw made his return to the side.
