Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney named in Premier League's Hall of Fame

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has been named in the Premier League's Hall of Fame.

Rooney has been inducted alongside Patrick Viera as the first official inductees of 2022. Rooney joins fellow United legends David Beckham and Eric Cantona on the roll of honour, with the latter the first to have played for the Reds to join the list.

Rooney, who now manages at Derby, joins the Hall of Fame as the second-highest scorer in Premier League history, having scored 208 goals in 491 appearances, while also providing 103 assists throughout that period, a tally only beaten by two players.

The 36-year-old left United in 2017 as the club's top goalscorer and his record is unlikely to ever be beaten in the modern game.

"It's a huge honour for me to be named in the Premier League Hall of Fame, alongside an incredible group of players who have already been inducted," Rooney told the Premier League in reaction to his induction.

"Growing up, I watched the Premier League as far back as I can remember. My dream was always to become a professional footballer, score goals and win trophies, and I was lucky enough to win the Premier League five times.

"I have so many brilliant memories from my years playing for Everton and Manchester United, and I'm really proud of what we achieved. To enter the Hall of Fame is very special for me personally and I'm grateful to be recognised."
