Football icon opens up on meeting former Miss Edinburgh wife in the capital

A South African football icon has seen a resurgent return to the UK along with his former Miss Edinburgh wife.

Benni McCarthy, is now on the coaching staff at Manchester United having turned around the fortunes of striker Marcus Rashford since his arrival. The 45-year-old was a cult hero during his career in England with Blackburn and West Ham.

But what is little known about the iconic goalscorer is that he tied the knot with an ex-Miss Edinburgh in 2014. Stacey Munro met the footballer when they were both filming a Nike advert in the Scottish capital.

McCarthy previously spoke of their relationship: “We met in Edinburgh. I went there on a shoot and she was one of those pretty girls they have as extras. I couldn’t concentrate on what I was supposed to do!”

The duo are estimated to be worth around £13m by Celebritynetworth.com. The majority of their fortune is understood to have come from South Africa’s record goalscorer during his playing time with Ajax, Celta Vigo and Porto - as well as the aforementioned prem sides, the Express reports.

McCarthy’s move to Manchester United was a surprise for many in the footballing world as the 45-year-old was working as a head coach of Amazulu back in his home country. But his work has been heralded by new coach Ten Hag.

The Dutchman recently explained: “In our coaching staff, we had a lot of defenders and midfield players. I wanted also to find a good balance. He is offensive [minded] as he is a former striker and that is also a really specific job task in the team. I never played there, so I’m [always] lucky to have someone in my staff who played there.

"Football is about scoring and you have a goalkeeping specialist, but you also have offensive specialists and in particular we have a specific scoring trainer. He has to add that, in details, working and for the rest of us he has a relationship to all the players in our squad. He also has to work on the togetherness and he is doing a great job on that.”

After Rashford scored in United’s 2-2 draw with Leeds last week, the England forward became the first Red Devils player to score 20 goals in three different seasons. It proves that McCarthy’s appointment has paid off.
