Man United give Cristiano Ronaldo update on early pre-season exit amid Chelsea transfer links

The transfer saga surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo looks as though it will continue until the very last moments of the summer transfer window. The Portuguese international is said to have asked to leave Manchester United in the market as he looks to compete at the highest level in the twilight of his career.

With agent Jorge Mendes looking for a solution, discussions with new Chelsea owner Todd Boehly included talks of a potential move to Stamford Bridge. With the Blues on the lookout for a striker, following difficulties surrounding goal scoring last campaign, a move for the 37-year-old seems unlikely but not ruled out.

Ronaldo missed out on the majority of pre-season with United, cited as personal reasons for his absence. He has since made his return though, joining up with the squad in training and getting his first taste of footballing action against Rayo Vallecano in a friendly at Old Trafford. The forward only managed to play for the first half though and was substituted at half-time in the 1-1 draw.

What followed, however, was the star being pictured leaving the ground before the end of the game. In avoiding to stay until the final whistle, many suggested it was a transfer hint, with his frustration keeping him from staying at the club longer than he had to.

The Sun reported that Manchester United were "unimpressed" by the gesture, suggesting that it set a bad example for the football club. The club have spoken out about the situation after declining to do so initially.

According to Sky Sports, via the Mirror, the Red Devils have "no issue" in Ronaldo leaving the game early and have no problem with the situation. It is clarified that several first-team stars were allowed to leave after their involvement in the game had come to an end and that the striker was not the only one to do so.

It remains to be seen whether the 37-year-old will get that move away from the club or if the "not for sale" stance set will be softened. However, it appears as though it won't be resolved before their opening fixture at the weekend unless a quick resolution is found.
