Man still fighting for life after car flipped off road

A man remains in a critical condition after a crash in Runcorn.

The 41-year-old was a passenger in a silver Mini Cooper when it crashed and overturned onto an embankment on the A533 Southern Expressway. Police and ambulance crews were called to the scene, at around 6pm, on Monday, October 17.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service also attended as the passenger was trapped in the car with serious injuries. Police confirmed the driver had fled from the scene.

Officers investigating the crash recently released an image of the car involved, in the hopes it will lead to information. A 29-year-old man, from Widnes, was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, and later released under investigation.

Enquiries are ongoing and investigators have now released an automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) camera image of the car involved. Police Constable Liz Thompson, of Cheshire Police 's serious and complex collision investigation unit, said: "The A533 Southern Expressway is one of the main routes in and out of Runcorn and at the time this incident occurred there would have been a number of motorists passing through who may hold vital information.

"As part of our investigation we want to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident and believes they may have witnessed the collision or seen anything that didn’t look quite right. The same goes for anyone with any CCTV or dashcam footage of the incident.

"We’d also like to hear from anyone who saw the vehicle in the photo being driven from Widnes town centre towards Runcorn prior to the collision. From our enquiries, we believe the car left Widnes town centre at 5.47pm before being driven across the Mersey Gateway bridge towards Runcorn.

"I urge anyone with any information – no matter how small – to get in touch. Information can be reported online at www.cheshire.police.uk/tell-us, or by calling 101, quoting IML 1391017."
