Man learned his husband had drowned when he checked news on holiday in Spain

Concern has been voiced about the lack of safety barriers at the end of a steep descent onto a towpath after a tragic drowning.

Andrés Navarro, 25, a Mexican national from Ballybough, drowned after falling into the Royal Canal from the towpath near the bridge in Dublin in the early hours of August 21, 2022.

Coroner, Aisling Gannon, said she would contact both Dublin City Council and Waterways Ireland about the concerns raised at an inquest into the death of Mr Navarro by the victim’s husband Raymond McSweeney.
