Man dies in Snowdonia fall after rock breaks away from mountain

A man has died after falling from a mountain in Eryri, also known as Snowdonia. Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation said the man died after a rock he was holding onto broke away from a mountain in the Glyderau area causing him to fall a "considerable distance".

Detailing the rescue, the organisation said the tragedy happened while three young men were ascending the Gribin Ridge in the Glyderau part of the mountain range on Sunday, February 5, when a handhold broke away from the mountain.

A recovery mission, which included the coastguard, continued through Sunday but sadly the man did not survive his injuries. The mountain rescue team said: "The thoughts of all team members are with the casualties family and friends."

No details of the man have been confirmed by the rescue organisation or emergency services but he is believed to be a 23-year-old from the Yorkshire area of England. The Glyderau are a mountain group in Snowdonia, very popular with walkers and climbers and often involve scrambling.
