Man City vs Manchester United LIVE: Premier League result and final score as Amad Diallo turns dramatic derby

Amad Diallo scored a stunning winner for Manchester United to turn a dramatic derby as Manchester City collapsed again to continue their miserable run under Pep Guardiola.

Josko Gvardiol’s first-half header looked to have settled a clash that was low on quality, until Diallo punished a weak backpass from Matheus Nunes to win Ruben Amorim’s side a late penalty.

Bruno Fernandes stepped up to equalise as the clock ticked over to 90 minutes - before Diallo struck again to reach a through pass, flick the ball over Ederson, and squeeze a finish in to spark wild scenes in the away end.

The result means City have now lost eight of their last 11 games, while Amorim enjoyed his best moment yet in charge of United after starting the day by dropping both Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho.

But up stepped Diallo, who inspired an unthinkable comeback. Follow all of the latest from the Manchester derby in our live blog below:

Man City’s worsening crisis shows why they need these five new signings

13:06 , Richard Jolly

It was neither the most extreme or most expensive piece of scrambled thinking by anyone of a Manchester City persuasion. Yet as Pep Guardiola assessed a run of results that would have seemed beyond anyone’s comprehension, two months ago, there was a statistic he kept quoting. “When you lose eight of 10 at a big club,” he said. It is actually eight in 11, but that is scant consolation.

Where did it come from? Where does it end? Not against Manchester United. Just when City thought they were out of crisis, they pulled themselves back in. The managerial godfather blamed himself. “I am the boss, I am the manager, I am not good enough,” said a self-flagellating Guardiola. “That is the truth.”

Phil Foden: Man City players continue to believe in ‘process’ and Pep Guardiola

16:32 , Jamie Braidwood

Phil Foden says Manchester City’s players continue to believe in the “process” and manager Pep Guardiola despite rivals Manchester United extending their wretched recent run.

“We are still nowhere near our level, but I still believe that we are playing good enough to get points and results,” Foden said.

“It’s about remaining focused throughout the full 90 minutes, but we keep switching off at important times. We just need to get the focus right.

“We stick together, regroup and believe in ourselves after what we’ve achieved in the past.

“We keep believing in the process and the manager – I’m sure if we do that we will get back to winning ways and get back to our level.”

Diogo Dalot says Manchester United need ‘to work hard and suffer’

15:04 , Jamie Braidwood

Diogo Dalot says there is “no space” at Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United for those unwilling to dig deep and “suffer” in the team’s pursuit of progress.

Dalot says “fighting until the end is the DNA of this club” and feels Amorim has harnessed that while instilling resilience during his short time in charge.

“I think it’s clear it’s coming from him,” the full-back said after United followed up Thursday’s 2-1 Europa League comeback win with another victory in that manner at the Etihad Stadium.

“The message was clear from the beginning: if you want to succeed and if you want to thrive, you have to suffer. That’s not just in football but in life.

“If you want to have success, you have to work hard and suffer. I think the message is really clear.

“If you want to succeed at this club, you have to suffer and if you’re ready to do that with us, we’re going to be a good team. If you’re not, there’s no space for you.”

Harry Maguire provides update on Man Utd contract talks: ‘All the signs are positive’

14:04 , Richard Jolly

Harry Maguire is in talks with Manchester United to extend his stay at Old Trafford and is positive a new contract will be agreed.

The England centre-back is in the last few months of the six-year deal he signed when he joined United for £80m in 2019, though the club have an option to extend that for a further season.

But the 31-year-old has held discussions with United about remaining beyond 2026, with a long-term contract potentially on the table.

“All the signs are positive at the moment and the chat that I’m having is really positive,” he said. “I’ve still got this year to go with an option in their hands.”

Harry Maguire feels ‘statement’ derby comeback win will boost Man Utd’s belief

12:05 , Jamie Braidwood

Harry Maguire felt Ruben Amorim’s new-look Manchester United made a statement with Sunday’s stunning derby turnaround at Manchester City.

The Portuguese’s first trip across the city will live long in the memory, with the match ending in a 2-1 comeback win just as Thursday’s Europa League trip to Viktoria Plzen did.

Josko Gvardiol’s header had City on course for a much-needed win until the 88th minute, when United captain Bruno Fernandes silenced the Etihad Stadium from the spot.

Amad Diallo won that penalty and then conjured up a memorable 90th-minute winner as Amorim’s first Manchester derby ended in his biggest result since succeeding Erik ten Hag last month.

“It’s been a difficult start to the season for us and not much for our fans to cheer about, so today’s for them,” defender Maguire said.

Ruben Amorim speaks out on Manchester United dressing room leaks

11:05 , Jamie Braidwood

Ruben Amorim has admitted it is “not a good thing” that his Manchester United line-up is being leaked before matches.

The United team spread on social media on Saturday evening ahead of their clash with Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

As revealed online, Amorim left out Marcus Rashford and top scorer Alejandro Garnacho from the matchday squad, later explaining: “It’s important for me the performance in training, the performance in game, the way you dress, the way you eat, the way you engage with the team-mates, the way you push your team-mates.”

The leaked teamsheet did not appear to affect United’s success as they came back from a goal down to beat the champions 2-1 thanks to a late winner by Amad Diallo.

Afterwards, Amorim said he was aware of the leak coming out of his dressing room.

A shadow of themselves, Man City have reached an unthinkable position

07:30 , Richard Jolly

If it were a contest to find the most troubled club inside the M60, Manchester City were the derby winners. In every other respect, it was another disastrous day for them. In snatching defeat from the jaws from victory, they gave Ruben Amorim’s derby debut an unexpectedly happy ending. On a day when Amorim made a statement selection by omitting Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho, the speedy winger he did select, Amad Diallo, etched his name into this fixture’s folklore, displaying the pace Pep Guardiola’s creaking team lack, first winning a penalty, then scoring a dramatic decider. “We have Fergie time and something magic happened,” said Amorim.

But for City, it was another capitulation, another collapse. After Feyenoord’s three goals in 15 minutes at the Etihad Stadium came United’s two in three. “Three-nil up against Feyenoord, we have to win that game,” said Guardiola. “Today, we have to win that game.” They did not. A team who lost a lead to Amorim’s Sporting last month repeated the feat against his Manchester United: but at home, but later, but when their plight is greater.

‘He’s unstoppable’: Bruno Fernandes on Amad Diallo

06:30 , Jamie Braidwood

Bruno Fernandes said Amad Diallo can be unstoppable as he challenged the Manchester United winger to continue showing his form week to week.

“He’s been doing great things and there’s a lot more to come,” Fernandes told Sky after Diallo starred in the 2-1 win over Manchester City in the derby.

“He’s always active, always alive and this is why he gets the penalty and his goal. He’s been brilliant but I shouldn’t say much as we need to keep him going as we need him at this level. Like this he is unstoppable.

“I’m pretty sure he can do this every week. We expect it. He knows the expectation when playing for Manchester United. He’s getting his chance deservedly. When you do the right things at the right moments the rewards are here.”

Ruben Amorim’s first major Manchester United call pays off to send message to dropped duo

05:30 , Jamie Braidwood

It was bold. It was brave. And for 88 minutes it looked very foolish indeed. But this is why Ruben Amorim has been tasked with being Manchester United’s saviour. From the minute he walked in the door, he promised short-term pain for long-term game. It seemed, however, he had taken things a step too far. Whatever Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho had done to be omitted from the squad for a crucial Manchester derby, it should not have come at the cost of his team getting a result at the Etihad.

Amad Diallo, in winning an 88th minute penalty and firing a sensational winner, instead gave Amorim the ultimate justification for making the big calls, even for the biggest games. Many will say such courage has long been conspicuous by its absence around Old Trafford. Amad is already Amorim’s posterboy for this high intensity, high press game he wants to instil at United. Rashford and Garnacho, already, are anything but.

Roy Keane ‘embarrassed’ as Kyle Walker sparks controversy in Manchester derby

04:30 , Jamie Braidwood

Former Manchester United skipper Roy Keane launched a scathing attack on Manchester City full-back Kyle Walker after he went to ground following a confrontation with Rasmus Hojlund.

Walker and Hojlund went head-to-head after the defender had blocked the striker’s run during the first half of Sunday’s Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium with the England international collapsing to the turf after contact was made.

Referee Anthony Taylor issued both men with yellow cards after the 40th-minute incident, but Sky Sports pundit Keane felt the official could have gone further.

Asked if he would have given a red card, the ex-midfielder said: “Red card? Yes, to Walker.

“You don’t mind a bit of this, this is going to happen in the game, a bit of argy-bargy, of course. But I look at it. He’s obviously been blocked, but Walker.

“Of course it’s a foul, it’s a free-kick and that’s fine. Hojlund is not happy - that’s fine - and he goes over. How can Walker... Walker must be embarrassed. He must be embarrassed to go down like that, an experienced player.

“Listen, they say contact - look at this. I don’t know the guy and I’m embarrassed for him.”

Gary Neville praises Ruben Amorim’s decision to drop Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho

03:30 , Jamie Braidwood

Gary Neville praised manager Ruben Amorim’s surprise decision to drop Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho from the matchday squad.

Neville, who challenged the pair to use their exclusion as a watershed, told Sky Sports: “I want Marcus Rashford and Garnacho to come back stronger, take the message that they’ve been given this morning by going training at the training ground on a Sunday when no one else is there, I want them to take this in the right spirit and become the very best players for Manchester United.

“But what’s really clear, I don’t care who you are, whether you’re Andrei Kanchelskis, Ryan Giggs, David Beckham, Nani, whoever you are as a wide player at Manchester United, you’ve got to run that way as fast as you can, you’ve got to run back that way as fast as you can.

“And then the rest of it... To be fair, they’ve got the talent and they’ve got the ability, but if you don’t do that, there’s no place for you in the club, there’s no place for you in the team.”

Rasmus Hojlund produces brilliant comeback after Kyle Walker clash: ‘And the Oscar goes to...’

02:30 , Jamie Braidwood

Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund joked that Kyle Walker should win an Oscar after Roy Keane criticised the Manchester City’s defender play-acting in the derby.

Hojlund and Walker were involved in a heated confrontation during the first half at the Etihad but it was the United striker who had the last laugh as Amad Diallo inspired a dramatic comeback.

Walker was involved in an argument with Hojlund after clipping the United striker, but then fell to the ground as the pair went head-to-head.

Replays showed there had been little to no further contact between Hojlund and Walker after the initial head-to-head, but that did not stop the 34-year-old collapsing to the turf.

On Sky Sports, former United captain Keane slated Walker’s dive as “embarrassing” and Hojlund took to Instagram shortly after United’s 2-1 win to post a brilliant comeback.

Ruben Amorim explains shock decision to drop Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho for Manchester derby

01:30 , Jamie Braidwood

Ruben Amorim has said Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho will have the chance to win their place back in the Manchester United team after they were dropped for the derby.

Amorim said his decision to drop Rashford and Garnacho was not a disciplinary move and was about the high standards he wants to set at Old Trafford.

“When people in the club are losing their jobs, we have to push our standards really high,” Amorim said, in reference to former Sporting Director Dan Ashworth, who parted ways with the club a week earlier.

“Next week, next game, new life, they are fighting for their places but for me it’s important, the performance in training, the performance in game, the way you dress, the way you eat, the way you engage with teammates, the way you push your teammates, everything is important when we want to change a lot of things.

“They have to fight for a place in the team and today the team proved we can leave anyone out of the squad and manage to win if you play together.”

Manchester United have to ‘kick-on’ ahead of Tottenham clash

00:30 , Jamie Braidwood

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane says Ruben Amorim’s side have to “turn up” at Tottenham in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

Victory over Manchester City has improved Amorim’s start in charge and United have the chance to book a place in the semi-finals when they visit Spurs on Thursday.

“United have had a really good day but they have to turn up at Spurs on Thursday night now – that’s the challenge,” Keane said on Sky Sports

“They have to kick-on now. This might just be the spark they need, for the manager and the players, who were kissing the badge at the end.

“They have to get momentum into their season, they’ve not had any. It’s been stop-start, hit and miss. There was a bit of self-destruction from Man City but United need to use this. Turn up at Spurs and put in a spirited performance.”

Ruben Amorim tells Man Utd to enjoy win for ‘10 minutes’

Sunday 15 December 2024 23:30 , Jamie Braidwood

Ruben Amorim on Manchester United’s comeback win at Man City as the Portuguese coach celebrated his second win over Pep Guardiola in as many games - but says he wants to enjoy victory for no more than “10 minutes”.

“I think we did a great job, we controlled it very well,” he said. “We didn’t allow much, of course we don’t create so much either but it was a divided game. But we believed a lot.

“It was different from Arsenal, we controlled the Arsenal game in the first half but I didn’t feel that belief. Today I felt it and I think that was the key point to change the game.

“I think for the fans it has a deep meaning especially in this context, this moment, but we had a difficult moment one week ago against Nottingham (Forest) at home, in the storm.

“After this match we are more happy, three points, but we have to continue and don’t stop. Next week we are playing again and it will change the way we see the team. Today is a good day, let’s enjoy it for 10 minutes and then think about the next game.”

Bernardo Silva rips into Man City for ‘playing like under-15s’

Sunday 15 December 2024 22:30 , Jamie Braidwood

“We totally deserved what happened. At this level, if it’s a game or two, you can say that they are being lucky. If it’s 10 games, it’s not about that.

“If in the 87th minute of a derby, you are winning 1-0 with a corner for your team and the ball ends up with your ‘keeper and a penalty for them, my friend…

“If you make these kinds of stupid decisions with three or four minutes to go, you deserve to pay for that.

“If you look at the game, there was only one team that could win. But at the end, we lost, and it’s not one game, it’s a lot of games lately.

“We have to look at ourselves. It’s not about luck. It’s the decisions you make. Today, in the last minutes we played like under-15s and we paid the price.”

Bernardo Silva accused Manchester City of playing like “under-15s” as he ripped into the “stupid decisions” his team made in the final minutes of their spectacular collapse against Manchester United.

City lost for the eighth time in 11 matches despite taking the lead into the 88th minute of their home Manchester derby at the Etihad, as Amad Diallo inspired a dramatic comeback for the visitors.

Diallo first punished a back-pass from Matheus Nunes to win a penalty for Bruno Fernandes, before the winger latched onto a long ball to round Ederson and squeeze a finish into the net.

It continued City’s miserable run under Pep Guardiola, who said after the champion’s latest defeat that he was “not good enough”, and Bernardo said the team “deserve to lose” based on their performance.

Pep Guardiola admits ‘I’m not good enough’ as Man City lose again

Sunday 15 December 2024 21:05 , Jamie Braidwood

“I’m the boss, I’m the manager, I have to find solutions but I don’t find solutions,” Pep Guardiola said. “This is a big club and when you lose eight of (11) something is wrong. You can say the schedule is tough or the injuries to players, but no.

“I’m the manager and I’m not good enough, simple as that. I have to find a way to talk to them, to train them in the way we need to play, to press the way we need to press. I’m not good enough. I’m not doing well. That is the truth.”

Pep Guardiola said he was “not good enough” to find a solution to Manchester City’s woes after they conceded two late goals to slump to a 2-1 home derby defeat to rivals Manchester United.

City had led through Josko Gvardiol’s 36th-minute header but rarely looked comfortable in the game and it all unravelled in stunning fashion at the death.

Matheus Nunes, asked to fill in at left-back, was guilty of a poor back-pass and then fouled Amad Diallo trying to make amends to concede a penalty which Bruno Fernandes converted in the 88th minute, and two minutes later Diallo found space to latch on to a long ball and score the winner.

Pep Guardiola admits Man City’s form ‘getting worse and worse'

Sunday 15 December 2024 19:29 , Jamie Braidwood

Pep Guardiola has admitted that he is not finding the solutions to Manchester City’s problems after their latest defeat. He told Sky Sports that Man City’s form is “getting worse and worse”.

“This year it happens many times unfortunately. We gave away many things. We are not nice in the way we played. Before it’s so fluid, now we’re struggling for different reasons. A lot of defeats. We put everything in and the game was almost closed. They had more possession first half but nothing special. We give away two goals, very difficult.

“It is what it is. What can I say? We can not blame this player or that one, it’s not that. It’s the season, a tough season. We didn’t play our best. We are not our best and we struggle a bit.

“Previously we didn’t lose that many in two seasons. Now we’ve done it in eight games. You have to defend. We have lost a lot of games. It’s difficult. We have to move on and try to find the solution and try to win games.

“I think in nine years it wasn’t the toughest defeat. Champions League defeats harder. But at the moment, we need results to lift our mood. It’s getting worse and worse. I have to find the solution. So far I didn’t find it and this is the truth.”

A shadow of themselves, Man City have reached an unthinkable position

Sunday 15 December 2024 19:10 , Richard Jolly

For City, it was another capitulation, another collapse. After Feyenoord’s three goals in 15 minutes at the Etihad Stadium came United’s two in three. A team who lost a lead to Amorim’s Sporting last month repeated the feat against his Manchester United: but at home, but later, but when their plight is greater.

It was an eighth defeat in 11 games for a manager who has been a byword for winning. Guardiola finished with the now familiar chorus of “sacked in the morning” ringing in his ears. His melodramatic reaction when Matheus Nunes conceded the spot kick that Bruno Fernandes was to convert showed his fears about the fragility of this side. They duly lost. Again.

“I want to thank God for this. Let’s enjoy this and then look to the next game.”

Bruno Fernandes adds: “He’s a man of few words in English! He’s doing great things. There is more to come, too. I want him to keep going. He is always alive. When he’s like this he is unstoppable. He can do this week after week.”

It was a poor game in many respects in Manchester, with both sides lacking real quality in parts.

City were probably the better of the two sides for the most part, but a draw would have been a fair result overall.

In the end, United pounced at the right time to take advantage of some poor decision-making by City, and they come away with (a perhaps undeserved) three points.

Rather pedestrian fare from two uninspired teams in an error-riddled game. City at least have a lot of people in midfield, which Guardiola prefers. United were arguably the better side for the period around the goal, but still find themselves one down and, some Amad runs aside, not looking likely to equalise in a side that now seems overloaded with defenders. The attackers on the bench are, er, Zirkzee and Antony.

HALF-TIME! Manchester City 1-0 Manchester United

Sunday 15 December 2024 17:33 , Chris Wilson

A curious half in Manchester, with both sides looking nervous and some very disjointed play in attack.

Even City’s goal prompted an irritate reaction from Guardiola, who was maybe annoyed at the short corner routine. The goal was fortuitous, but they’ve been the better of the two sides and will be fully aware of the lack of United threat if they can keep the game like this in the second half.

For United, it’s a remarkably similar situation – they’ve played okay at times but have lacked anything in attack. 42 per cent of their conceded goals this season have come from corners, apparently.

A quiet first half so far. City's system is something of an oddity, with a lot of midfielders in parts of the middle. There are times when Matheus Nunes is man-marking Amad Diallo, who looks United's main threat. United at least have hints of a counter-attacking threat, but without the decision-making to make the most of breaks. But very few chances and very little of Erling Haaland so far.

A reminder that if City were to win here, despite all the attention on their results, they’d be only six points behind Liverpool (who would have a game in hand though). You never know what might happen if they dip into the market in January...

Mason Mount's departure felt sadly predictable but continues his horrible misfortune with injuries. Mount is a player Ruben Amorim really likes and one of the few who suits his 3-4-3 formation. Without Garnacho and Rashford, Amorim had fewer options to replace him and United have a more defensive look now, with Kobbie Mainoo coming on in midfield and Bruno Fernandes moving further forward.
