Man allegedly supplied heroin to 23yo who died from suspected overdose

A man remains behind bars after allegedly supplying drugs to a 23-year-old woman who later died from a suspected heroin overdose.

Justin Andrew James, 40, was denied bail in the ACT Magistrates Court on Thursday.

He is yet to enter pleas to three charges of trafficking in a controlled drug other than cannabis and a single charge of possessing a prohibited weapon.

Police allege that about 12am on June 6, a friend took the woman to hospital after she began suffering adverse effects from a heroin injection.

The woman was treated by hospital staff but was declared dead a short time later.

Police began an investigation into the drug supplier and, about 6.40pm on Wednesday, officers stopped the 40-year-old man near his home in Reid and searched him.

Police allegedly found more than 30 grams of suspected heroin and methamphetamine hidden in his underwear.

After searching the James' home, officers seized a spring-loaded extendable baton and other drug paraphernalia.

On Thursday, prosecutor Harry Wagner outlined James' criminal history which included drug possession, drug trafficking and failing to appear in court.

"The seriousness of the current [allegations], and both the likelihood and anticipation of further charges, gives rise to the likelihood of failure to appear," Mr Wagner said.

Legal Aid lawyer Sam Brown said that while "the overdose is a tragedy", James had not yet been charged in relation to the death.

Mr Brown told the court James was prepared not to contact "a large list of people" police wanted to speak with.

The lawyer said the alleged drug trafficker had been under surveillance by police for "a significant period" before his arrest.

Magistrate Robert Cook denied bail and adjourned the case to return later this month.
