Two men arrested, accused of choking partners in separate violent incidents

Two men were arrested overnight after allegedly choking their partners in separate acts of domestic violence.

An alleged victim was seen "with blood on her and a ripped shirt," a prosecutor told the ACT Magistrates Court.

One of the accused men, 29, was wearing fluffy slippers when he appeared in court on Tuesday and was granted bail.

The man has not been named to protect the alleged victim's identity.

Police allege about 6pm on Monday, the 29-year-old man from Harrison assaulted his wife after a verbal argument with another family member.

When his wife tried to speak to him, he allegedly slapped her in the face and kicked and choked her.

The woman managed to free herself and call police.

The 29-year-old has not yet entered pleas to charges of aggravated assault occasioning actual bodily harm, aggravated common assault and choking, suffocating or strangling another person.

A prosecutor opposed bail and said the alleged victim had told police about previous assaults.

However, the court heard the woman now wanted to withdraw her complaint.

The prosecutor said the alleged choker had been on a good behaviour order and a suspended sentence at the time of his latest allegations.

Legal Aid duty lawyer Gillian Bilton said, if granted bail, the man would live at a different address and would stop drinking alcohol.

In a separate incident, about 10.40pm on Monday, police visited a home in Gordon following reports of an altercation between a man and woman.

Chief Magistrate Lorraine Walker granted bail, warning the man that there was "no point trying to put the hard word on" his wife and the prosecution was responsible for deciding whether charges would be withdrawn.

Police allege a 41-year-old man pushed his partner into a cupboard before choking her after they got into an argument.

Another resident of the home separated the two before the man allegedly began breaking windows and doors and choking the woman again.

The 41-year-old man was arrested and was expected to face charges of choking, suffocating or strangling another person, property damage and aggravated common assault.

The 29-year-old is set to face court again at a later date.
