A Sydney man has faced court accused of launching a stabbing attack in a kebab shop before fleeing in a taxi and then trying to escape police custody by climbing through the ceiling of a hospital room.
Officers responding to the initial incident rendered first aid to a critically-injured 42-year-old stabbing victim before he was taken by ambulance to Westmead Hospital. He has since undergone emergency surgery and is reported to be in a stable condition.
Police were called to Dawson Mall at Mt Druitt in the city's west about 8am on Friday, following reports a man had been stabbed multiple times while inside a kebab shop.
They were told the alleged attacker had left the premises before hailing a cab on North Parade.
It's alleged he then left the taxi and went into a fast-food restaurant on Jersey Road at Plumpton.
Crime scenes were set up at both takeaway food outlets and the alleged getaway cab was also seized for forensic examination.
Soon after leaving the Plumpton restaurant, the suspect was arrested by police at Hebersham.
Taken to Auburn Hospital for precautionary reasons, he then allegedly climbed into the ceiling with officers deploying a Taser to recapture him.
The 38-year-old appeared briefly in Parramatta Bail Court on Saturday charged with attempted murder and escaping custody and was refused bail to return to court in January.
A man has meanwhile faced court on the NSW mid north coast following the murder of a 70-year-old woman at a home unit at South West Rocks on Friday.
Glen Murdoch, 59, was allegedly arrested by officers at the scene and police say he was known to the victim.
He was refused bail and is due to reappear before Port Macquarie Local Court on Monday.
