What to watch for
Pochettino’s experimental roster was always going to make this international window about the future and so it has proved. The outlook is bright.
While Pochettino is building on foundations established at the World Cup, Rafa Márquez is aiming to establish a basis of his own as Mexico’s new manager. Mexico have won their last two meetings with the USA. Three in a row could suggest the pendulum of power in Concacaf has swung back towards El Tri.
With so many key figures such as Christian Pulisic and Raúl Jiménez missing, Saturday’s match in Glendale will be played with a caveat. Both teams have much more talent to call on. Nevertheless, this encounter will mark the first episode of a new era of the rivalry between the USA and Mexico.
Player to watch: Cavan Sullivan, USA – The most exciting American wonderkid in a generation is justifying the hype. Sullivan looks like he belongs as an important part of the USMNT and will almost certainly get an opportunity to make his mark against Mexico in Glendale.
