A MAN accused of bashing his former partner with a can of bourbon, leaving her with facial injuries, has been refused bail in court, as a magistrate described the allegations as "serious".
Rodney John Wilson, 50, remained in custody on Monday after he unsuccessfully tried for conditional release following the alleged attack on the woman at Raymond Terrace in the early hours of May 24.
Mr Wilson is facing charges of breaching an apprehended violence order and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
Both counts are listed as being allegedly domestic violence-related.
Raymond Terrace Local Court heard that Mr Wilson struck the woman to the head several times with a full can of pre-mixed bourbon drink following an argument.
The court heard the woman was left with a cut above her right eye, as well as bruising and swelling to her face.
Magistrate Justin Peach said Mr Wilson was accused of using the can of bourbon as a weapon, which allegedly caused "reasonably serious injuries".
He said it was "highly likely" Mr Wilson would receive a full-time prison sentence if convicted.
"In my view, the allegation before the court is a reasonably strong one given the injuries," Magistrate Peach said.
He said Mr Wilson's history of breaching bail, AVOs and court orders - along with the likelihood of jail time if convicted, increasing the risk Mr Wilson would fail to appear at court if granted conditional liberty - meant he was not willing to grant bail.
Mr Wilson has pleaded not guilty to both counts.
The matter was set down for hearing at Raymond Terrace Local Court on October 4.
