Man, 42, is first person arrested after anti-migrant protests in Portsmouth

  • Hampshire Police have arrested a 42-year-old man on suspicion of violent disorder and assaulting a constable following anti-migrant protests in Portsmouth .
  • The suspect is the first of several anticipated arrests after demonstrators blocked roads, damaged official vehicles , and injured police officers on Sunday.
  • Assistant chief constable Tony Rowlinson condemned the events as violent public disorder rather than a peaceful protest and warned such behaviour will not be tolerated.
  • Sussex Police have launched a separate investigation into abusive social media posts targeting an RNLI volunteer wrongly accused by protesters of assisting migrants.
  • The volunteer crew member, Neil, rejected claims that he was a traitor and confirmed he will continue his decade-long lifesaving work.
