Major search and rescue operation underway for two on board boat that sank in sea

A major search operation is underway after a boat sank with two people on board.

Lifeboats and a search and rescue helicopter have been spotted off the coast near Berry Head in Tor Bay, Devon.

The RNLI say it is responding to an incident off the coast this afternoon.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency received a report of a small vessel sinking off the coast with two people on board earlier today.

One person has been rescued by the lifeboat while a search is ongoing for the second person. Two lifeboats from Torbay and Exmouth have been launched to the scene, approximately seven miles from shore.

A search and rescue helicopter has also been sent the area.

A spokesperson for Maritime and Coastguard Agency said: "HM Coastguard is coordinating a search after a small vessel with two people on board was reported to have sunk off the coast of Torquay today.

"The alarm was raised at about 10.30am, prompting the immediate launch of the Coastguard search and rescue helicopter from Lee-on-Solent, and the RNLI all-weather lifeboat from Torbay.

"Devon and Cornwall Police and the South Western Ambulance Service attended to the survivor. MAIB have been informed."

A witness told Devon Live: "I'm a skipper on a fishing boat and am currently listening to the search on the radio.

"The search and rescue helicopter Exmouth lifeboat and Torbay lifeboat (are) in search formation and several fishing boats heading to join."
