Louisiana health officials have warned residents and beachgoers about a potentially deadly bacterial infection after the state reported nine cases of Vibrio vulnificus and five deaths so far in 2026. The number of fatalities is significantly higher than Louisiana’s recent average. In previous years, the state reported an average of about seven cases and one death during the same period.
The Louisiana Vibrio vulnificus outbreak has drawn attention because all nine cases reported this year were linked to wounds being exposed to seawater, according to the Louisiana Department of Health. Officials also said all of the patients had underlying health conditions.
