Liz Truss resigns: 'Forget PM - the whole Tory party should go'

Forget Liz Truss - it's the whole Tory party that should be packing their bags tonight, according to two Ayrshire politicians.

Labour's Colin Smyth, who represents the South of Scotland, says that Ms Truss may have paid for the catastrophe in Downing Street, but that she alone is not to blame.

With her resignation this afternoon, she became the UK's shortest ever reigning Prime Minister at 45 days.

Labour MSP Mr Smyth said: "It is right that Liz Truss has resigned. Her premiership has been a catastrophic failure and sadly it’s ordinary families who are paying the price with higher mortgages and rising prices in the shops.

"But the truth is this entire discredited Tory government has to go.

"The next Tory leader - the third since the last election will have no mandate whatsoever to be Prime Minister – and should call a general election so that the people can decide.

"Locally we should never forget that Liz Truss leadership bid was backed by almost every Tory MP and MSP in the region and not one of them had the spine to call for her to quit even after weeks of economic damage.

"I think they owe their constituents an apology for their appalling judgement and getting it so badly wrong."

And Katy Clark, Labour MSP for West Scotland, added: "This crisis of government cannot be resolved by the Tories simply holding yet another leadership election.

"Liz Truss was able to pursue such a damaging prospectus despite her only electoral mandate coming from a small Conservative party membership far removed from public opinion.

"The truth is the entire government has to go. Over 12 years, the Tories have trashed the economy, presided over the country’s disastrous response to the Covid pandemic and implemented austerity policies which have led to the immiseration of millions of people.

"We need a general election now."
