Liz Truss' 'icy' signal to Nicola Sturgeon during service for Queen in Edinburgh

Liz Truss's visit to Scotland to accompany King Charles around the UK following the death of the Queen went by without incident, however there was one slip. The Prime Minister was spotted giving First Minister Nicola Sturgeon a 'cold' stare during a service of prayer and reflection at St Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh.

King Charles III led a procession behind his mum's coffin as it was taken from the Palace of Holyroodhouse to the cathedral on Monday afternoon. The monarch was joined by his siblings Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward at the service, while Scottish political leaders Scottish Labour's Anas Sarwar, Tory leader Douglas Ross, Greens' Lorna Slater and Alex Cole-Hamilton from the Lib Dems were also in attendance.

During the service Sturgeon, dressed in an all black outfit and black hat, read the first lesson Ecclesiastes 3: 1–15. When the SNP leader stood up to give a reading in the Cathedral, Truss was spotted by many eagle-eyed viewers giving her a 'cold' look.

Many viewers took to social media after watching the awkward moment unfold. One person tweeted: "Oh wow.. if looks could kill the contempt that Truss has for Sturgeon clear for all to see."

Another added: "Anyone else see that look Liz Truss gave Sturgeon. As if to say..how come she's speaking first?" A third said: "Aye, look at Liz Truss fuming in St Giles ‘cos Nicola Sturgeon gets the first reading."

It's not the first time there has been tension between the pair. During the bitter Tory leadership race between the former Foreign Secretary and Rishi Sunak Truss branded Sturgeon an "attention seeker" and saying the best way of dealing with her is to "ignore her".

Asked about the calls for a second referendum on Scottish independence, Truss said: "I think the best thing to do with Nicola Sturgeon is ignore her. She is an attention seeker. That is what she is."

Sturgeon hit back claiming Truss quizzed her at COP26 in Glasgow about how to land an interview in Vogue magazine.

Speaking at an Edinburgh fringe event, Sturgeon said: "I remember it quite well actually. I had just done, and this is going to sound really up myself but I don’t mean to… I'd just been interviewed by Vogue, as you do… that was the main thing she wanted to talk to me about, she wanted to know how she could get into Vogue. I said to her, they came and asked me."
