Liverpool REGRET transfer business as another Reds legend departs: report

Liverpool boss Arne Slot arriving before a Premier League game.

Liverpool have seen an exodus of not just players, but club legends, since Arne Slot joined the club in 2024.

Liverpool appear on the brink of losing another Anfield icon in Alisson Becker this summer, set to leave alongside departing veterans Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson.

It has now been revealed that Liverpool are regretful of a particular transfer decision, with Alisson’s potential exit creating a dilemma for the Merseyside club.

Liverpool regret selling Caoimhin Kelleher

According to a report from TEAMtalk, with information provided by insider sources, Liverpool regret selling Caoimhin Kelleher to Brentford in the summer of 2025.

This sale has created a looming goalkeeper dilemma for the Reds, with Alisson Becker — the best shot-stopper in Premier League history — now set to depart, leaving huge shoes to fill for the currently injured Giorgi Mamardashvili.

The Republic of Ireland international is a cult hero in Liverpool.

The Republic of Ireland international was sold to the Bees in a deal that amounted to £18 million, which Liverpool were comfortable sanctioning at the time, however, it appears that regret has began to seep in at Anfield.

Mamardashvili has been given multiple starts for Liverpool across all major competitions this season, largely due to Alisson’s injury woes, and has reportedly left the coaching staff on Merseyside unimpressed.

The Georgian conceded with his final goalkeeping action before injury to Everton’s Beto at the Hill Dickinson stadium, subsequently being replaced by ex-Newcastle shot-stopper Freddie Woodman.

For all his attempts to persuade the Liverpool staff and faithful of his worthiness to sit upon Alisson’s throne, Mamardashvili was arguably outshone by Woodman in the Englishman’s first ever Liverpool start, who made a crucial save leading directly to an Andy Robertson counter-attacking goal during the Reds’ 3-1 victory over Crystal Palace last weekend.

The Georgian shot-stopper, currently sidelined with a ‘big wound’ from his action during the Merseyside derby, will now be expected to step up as Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper following news of Alisson’s potential departure to Juventus.

While there have been reports of Liverpool dipping back into the transfer market to regain Kelleher’s services – which Brentford boss Keith Andrews quickly denied in an interview with Sky Sports – it is hard to picture an Anfield return for the goalkeeper.

Instead, Porto’s Diogo Costa is one of multiple options the club are considering to bring to Liverpool, highlighting a potentially severe lack of faith in the injured Georgian.
