Police want to deploy live facial recognition cameras on the soon-to-be pedestrianised section of Oxford Street, senior Met officers have revealed.
It came as the force pledged to cut mobile phone thefts in the “hotspot” area of the West End by 20 per cent this year – and as Met commissioner Sir Mark Rowley publicly named and shamed Apple, Samsung and Google for a lack of action on making stolen phones worthless to criminal gangs.
