Lisandro Martinez ‘banned' from Ajax training amid Manchester United transfer talks

Lisandro Martinez was reportedly excluded from Ajax training on Thursday as Manchester United close in on a £46million deal.

The Manchester Evening News understands that United are now in advanced talks to sign the Argentine, who lifted the Eredivisie title under Erik ten Hag last season. The Dutch coach always had an intention of bringing in a defensive reinforcement this summer and turned to Martinez after Jurrien Timber backed away from a switch.

United saw a £37m first bid rejected by Ajax but stepped up their pursuit once Arsenal’s interest was confirmed. The Dutch champions are now bracing for Martinez’s exit, which has apparently led to them banning the player from training this morning.

De Telegraaf reports that the club does not want to risk the player getting injured and thus potentially throwing the deal into doubt. He Instead underwent a personal gym session away from the group.

His arrival at United could signal the exits of other centre-backs with six currently in the first team. Phil Jones, Eric Bailly and Axel Tuanzebe could all leave. Martinez was named Ajax's player of the year last season.

Meanwhile, United are confident in getting a deal over the line with reports elsewhere suggesting that their chase of Frenkie de Jong could be coming to a head this week.
