Lionel Messi's future at Paris Saint-Germain is 'more uncertain than ever' with the club having doubts over wehther to extend his contract, according to reports in France.
The Argentine wizard joined the star-studded outfit last summer on a free transfer after his contract with Barcelona expired, due to the financial ruin of the Catalonian club meaning that his 21-year stay on the east coast of Spain came to an abrupt end.
But things haven't quite gone to plan for Messi in his time in the French capital. Of course, they breezed the league title as expected last season with the likes of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe running riot alongside the Rosario-born magician as PSG won the league by 15 points. However, with the club being knocked out of the Champions League early on once again, morale has dropped and a 2-0 home defeat to Rennes on Sunday has opened up an even bigger can of worms at the club.
They only sit seven points clear of Marseille at the top of the league, and having been knocked out by Igor Tudor's men in the French Cup, there isn't much for Messi to win other than the league title. And with that in mind, L'Equipe have claimed that the club is no longer sure on extending his contract at the Parc des Princes - with Messi's future 'more uncertain than ever'.
The report states that amidst the 2-0 loss, Messi failed to acknowledge the fans despite the defeat as those in the stands whistled at his poor performance - which has been noted as the first time he had even been criticised by the home support.
Having been battered by Bayern Munich in the round of 16 in the Champions League, reports elsewhere have linked him with a move back to Barcelona; El Espanol have claimed that Barcelona are waiting for his return, and they represent a feasible option having just gone 12 points clear in the La Liga title race. With Kylian Mbappe and Neymar also falling under criticism, it is plausible that PSG's front line could be dismantled come the start of next season - starting with Messi.
