- Clancy, a 36-year-old former labor and delivery nurse, pleaded not guilty by reason of lack of criminal responsibility due to postpartum psychosis after strangling her three young children.
- When a jury is unable to reach a unanimous verdict required for a conviction or acquittal, the judge will declare a mistrial, forcing prosecutors to decide whether to retry the case, offer a plea deal, or drop the charges.
- The case goes back to the same status as before the trial started and Clancy could be once again charged with murder and held at a psychiatric hospital awaiting a resolution of the criminal case.
- The Plymouth County District Attorney said immediately after the ruling that prosecutors will decide at a later date whether to retry her. If prosecutors decide to try the case again, the jury selection process would commence and a new trial would be scheduled with a new jury.
