Lidl announces another price drop on milk at Irish supermarkets

Lidl Ireland has said it will be reducing the price of milk in-store for the second time in eight weeks.

The announcement, made by the German food retail giant, will become effective from Saturday, July 1.

Lidl slashed the price of milk earlier this year, cutting the price of a two-litre carton of milk by 10c - from €2.29 to €2.19.

The kitchen staple had seen unprecedented fluctuation in the last year due to the increased cost of production. In February 2022, a two-litre carton of milk in Lidl cost just €1.69 but that increased by 60c over a year to €2.29.

Lidl Ireland made the announcement of the first price cut in April, saying the move will effectively be passing €2.7 million in savings directly on to its shoppers in Ireland.

The second announcement sees Lidl droppinig the price of a 2-litre carton of milk from €2.19 to €2.09.

This will see €3 million in savings passed directly on to its shoppers in Ireland. Lidl was the first Irish retailer to reduce the price of the cupboard staple in May..

Announcing the price reduction J.P. Scally, Chief Executive Officer of Lidl Ireland & Northern Ireland said the discount grocery chain are "very conscious" of the cost-of-living challenges facing its customers.

He stressed that Lidl remain committed to leading the Irish grocery sector on price.

"We have dropped the prices of hundreds of household staple items in recent weeks, and we will continue to drop prices on the items that matter most to our customers.

"We were the first retailer in Ireland to drop the price of milk in May and we’re proud to be leading the way once again with this latest price cut," Mr Scally added.
