Liam Payne will be laid to rest this week, just over one month after his tragic death. However, his friend and reported manager Rogelio “Roger” Nores is apparently “not welcome” at the funeral which will be held in his hometown of Wolverhampton, UK.
According to British tabloid The Sun, the singer’s family is not comfortable with the Argentinian businessman being in attendance due to his connection with Liam’s death.
Nores is a 35-year-old energy sector businessman who reportedly met the former One Direction star in 2020. They formed a tight friendship and business relationship but eventually had a falling out. They reconnected before the singer’s trip to Argentina with his girlfriend Kate Cassidy, with the couple even visiting Nores’ home.
In the hours before his death on October 16, Nores was reported to be with Payne at the Casa Sur Hotel in Buenos Aries. The Daily Mail claimed that Nores was attempting to manage the singer’s erratic behaviour in the hotel lobby but he left 40 minutes before the 31-year-old’s death.
Nores has reportedly been working with Argentinian police and denies any connection to Payne’s death.
“I never abandoned Liam, I went to his hotel three times that day and left 40 minutes before this happened,” Nores told the Daily Mail.
“There were over 15 people at the hotel lobby chatting and joking with him when I left. I could have never imagined something like this would happen. I’ve given my statement to the prosecutor on October 17 as a witness and I haven’t spoken to any police officer or prosecutor ever since.”
Nores also denied that he was Payne’s manager, despite The Sun citing emails which claimed Nores was heading up Payne’s career.
Although Nores has been working with police, a source speaking to The Sun said Payne’s family didn’t feel comfortable with the energy tycoon attending the funeral.
“Liam’s family want his funeral to go off without a hitch and right now opinions are strained when it comes to Roger,” the source said.
“It’s true he and Liam had a bond but he’s never been popular when it comes to Liam’s wider circle. There is a difference in the narrative, Roger would say he stepped back from working with Liam — others would say he was pushed.
“Many people didn’t even know Liam and Roger had reconnected until his fateful trip to Argentina last month. Due to the ongoing investigation in Argentina, he’s not welcome at this week’s service.”
Liam Payne’s funeral is set to take place this week in a private ceremony in his hometown. It is expected to be attended by his girlfriend Kate Cassidy, along with his One Direction bandmates Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson.
