The Department of Social Services did not pass on advice about the unlawfulness of the robodebt scheme, which allowed the illegal debt collection scheme to go ahead.

In 2015, the Department of Human Services, advised by the Department of Social Services, rolled out a debt collection program which falsely accused welfare recipients of owing the government money.
