Leeds United sniffing around Swansea City's big asset is prime example of Russell Martin's remit

When Swansea City head coach Russell Martin signed Flynn Downes last summer, he saw it fit to thank the club’s owners for their backing.

The £1million capture was Martin’s second signing and even back then you got the impression that he was over the moon with his new recruit, having been priced out before. “He’s a player that we had a look at in my previous club. Unfortunately we were well priced out of the market,” said the head coach.

“When we came here and we realised that the owners were willing to back us on Flynn, we were really grateful for that. They understand what a good signing he can be, not just short term but long term. Young, hungry and athletic, an excellent player, felt he needed a fresh start.
