Leeds United news as Watford defender makes relegation vow despite damaging Whites defeat

Here are the latest Leeds United evening headlines on Sunday 10 April 2022.

Kabesele vow

Watford defender Christian Kabesele has vowed to keep fighting after the damaging 3-0 defeat to Leeds United on Saturday. The Hornets had the chance to move within five points of their weekend opponents with a win but were plunged deeper into relegation trouble after a ninth home loss in a row.

Watford now face a major fight to stay in the Premier League with away trips to Manchester City and Chelsea still to come. Speaking to Watfordfc.com, Kabesele has insisted that he and his teammates will refuse to let their heads drop despite their current predicament.

He said: “All the goals today came from us not being ruthless enough in defence. At 1-0 down we wanted to start the second half strongly, and I think we did. We were still in the game and had big chances to score but couldn’t make the most of them.

“But while we were pushing we had a lapse in concentration and they scored the second goal. We need to work hard on being consistent for the whole 90 minutes.

“It’s a little bit cliched but we need to keep working and stay strong. Next week is another big game – you can be sure that we won’t drop, and we’ll do everything we can to claim the three points against Brentford.”

Bamford admission

Patrick Bamford has claimed that he has his sights on a return at the start of next season as it look increasingly unlikely he will feature again for Leeds United this term. A string of different injuries have ruined the England striker’s campaign as he has started just seven Premier League games since August.

The Whites were hoping to have him back for the run in following the international break but he had to be withdrawn after just 23 minutes in the win at Wolves due to a ruptured plantar fascia. Bamford admitted that it was his desire to return to help Leeds in the relegation fight that led to the full rupture in an interview with Football Focus.

He said: “Even before the Wolves game, I knew that I wasn’t quite right and in the warm-up I should’ve just stopped but I really wanted to play. I tried changing my insoles thinking it would do something but it did nothing. There were four movements in the game and then it fully tore on the last one and I knew it.

“It wasn’t until I sat down in the dugout that it hit me and I got a bit emotional. There’s a good chance I won’t play again this season and if I do it’ll be a bonus. So, in my head already, I’ve set my target for the start of next season.”

Warnock on Marsch

Neil Warnock believes Leeds United are 'more organised' and less 'gung-ho' under Jesse Marsch. The Whites eased to a 3-0 win over 19th place Watford on Saturday, making it 10 points from their last four matches.

The run of good form has coincided with the departure of much-admired former manager Marcelo Bielsa and the arrival of Jesse Marsch. Speaking on Soccer Saturday ahead of the game at Vicarage Road, Warnock praised Marsch for the work he has done from a defensive standpoint at Leeds.

He said: “I think they’re just a bit more organised aren’t they. They’re not so gung-ho and they managed to keep that consistency in a few games.

“But I think if Burnley win [on Sunday] there’s going to be a lot of people nervous, including the ones above Leeds – Brentford and people like that as well as Everton.”
