Leeds United are set to face Premier League competition for Swansea City midfielder Flynn Downes. The Whites were reported earlier this year to be interested in signing the 23-year-old who has plenty of suitors.
WalesOnline understand Southampton, Wolves and Crystal Palace are also interested in the midfielder this summer who impressed for Swansea in the Championship last season.
Swansea were expecting interest this summer in Downes and striker Joel Piroe following their stellar Championship campaigns. Should the Swans sell one of their two stars, it would make it more likely they would retain the other with them having less of a need to sell.
Downes joined Swansea in August 2021 from Ipswich Town, and made 39 appearances in all competitions last season. The 23-year-old operates predominately as a defensive midfielder which would make him a direct replacement for Kalvin Phillips who looks set to join Manchester City for £42m.
Given the Whites reported interest dates back to around March-April time, it would seem as though Leeds have been planning around a Phillips departure for sometime. However, WalesOnline also state Leeds have yet to make any solid contact with Swansea for the promising midfielder while Southampton, Wolves and Crystal Palace have all made tentative enquiries.
Downes still has three-years left on his deal with Swansea, but given their need to raise funds this summer, the Championship side might be willing to part with the midfielder after just a season for a fee around the £10m mark.
