Laura Whitmore spoke of struggles as Love Island host days before quitting show

Laura Whitmore had described hosting Love Island as "a bit exhausting" and "tough" in an interview just weeks before announcing her departure from the popular ITV show.

The presenter, 37, began hosting the ITV2 show in 2020 but revealed this evening she will not be returning for the next series - which is expected to air early next year.

She had spoken about the difficulty of hosting such a show whilst appearing as a guest on the Distraction Pieces podcast, in an episode which was released last month.

Laura said: "Stuff with Love Island, it's just a bit exhausting sometimes because some of the stuff is just mental." She said it's less time-consuming than other jobs though.

She said the host only comes on a few times in each series and added: "It's always been the way, but it gets the most attention. It's a bit exhausting and it's tough."

Laura suggested it's "hard" seeing the way herself and other women - including the late Caroline Flack, who previously hosted Love Island - are talked about online.

The presenter said she saw the reaction that Caroline received every year - such as comments about hardly being on the show - and "never knew how she handled it".

Laura said she has herself received similar responses, adding on the podcast: "I get that some of it you have to take with a pinch of salt, but then some of it is a bit exhausting."

Announcing her departure from the ITV2 show, Laura said in a statement released on social media tonight: "Some news! I won’t be hosting the next series of Love island."

She took over as host from the late Caroline Flack (ITV/REX)

She continued: "There are certain elements of the show I've found very difficult that cannot be changed due to the format, including the flying back and forth to South Africa along with my new conflicting projects.

"I wish it was still possible but know you’ll be in safe hands. I was only planning to fill in for Caroline for a series and it turned into 3 series. I hope I did you proud Caroline."
