Three local fishermen and an international team of scientists caught and released a record-breaking porbeagle shark off the Donegal coast last week.
It is the biggest shark ever to be recorded in Irish waters, measuring over nine-feet long (2.8 meters) and weighing up to 500lbs (227kg) and is likely to be 25 to 30 years old.
The massive female porbeagle shark, which the team have nicknamed Danu, is a close relative of the Great White shark, and is considered to be "critically endangered". Despite their size, porbeagles are not considered to be dangerous to humans and very few attacks have been recorded.
