Lanarkshire pensioner's emotional thank-you to restaurant staff who helped him after taking ill

A Lanarkshire pensioner has paid a heartfelt thank you to kind workers at a restaurant who took care of him after he fell ill.

Alexander Brodie was out with his partner Deborah when he took unwell, resulting in a bad fall on Rutherglen's Stonelaw Road.

Staff and customers at nearby Luciano's restaurant and Café India raced out to help - now the 76-year-old contacted Lanarkshire Live to express his thanks.

Alexander said: "They waited with me for the ambulance and first aiders kept me company, made sure that I wasn't injured and ensured I stayed awake and conscious during my wait for the ambulance.

"Some lovely customers even went to get my dog from the car for me so that she wasn't left alone.

"Everyone was incredibly helpful and supportive and I don't know what I would have done without this support.

"Thankfully I'm now out of hospital and on the mend, but wanted to give a shout out to all the staff at the restaurant, and many of your customers, who were amazing."

Alex took ill due to being prescribed two different painkillers which clashed badly, leaving him feeling unwell and delusional. He attempted to get into a car, not realising it wasn't his own, and suffered hallucinations for days afterwards.

His partner, Deborah Butcher, told how Alexander had gone to get a takeaway when he started to become confused and ended up falling.

She added: "I was still in the car at that point and was becoming concerned.

"When I got there, so many people were coming out to help - a couple of customers at Luciano's even went to get our dog so she wasn't stuck in the car for too long.

"We are so grateful for everyone that helped, it felt like a real community coming together."

Manager at Luciano's, Lorna Gilchrist, told how the restaurant was "getting quite busy" as it was a Saturday night, when staff realised Alexander had collapsed outside.

She added: "Everybody just pitched in to help out.

"Someone had put a jacket over him and made sure he was in the recovery position, we called the ambulance and two people went into the car park to find his dog.

"We were all so relieved to find out he was OK afterwards. It was really lovely how everyone that was around there just helped out and made sure he was OK."
