Lanarkshire MSP hits out at Chancellor's mini-budget

A Lanarkshire MSP has lambasted Tory Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng’s economic plans announced at Westminster.

Clare Adamson, MSP for Motherwell and Wishaw, derided the lack of targeted support for people on low incomes as the cost-of-living crisis continues to hit.

Amongst the measures announced, the top rate of income tax will be scrapped in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland – this will benefit those earning more than £150,000 per year.

The Chancellor also confirmed that the cap on bankers’ bonuses will be removed.

The value of the pound continued to fall against the dollar following the announcements.

Ms Adamson said: “At the very least the Tories have stopped pretending to care about people in poverty.

“The Chancellor’s new measures are designed to benefit the party donors that put this administration into power.

“Huge amounts of borrowing combined with tax cuts for the wealthiest will rack up UK debt and those on low incomes will end up paying for it.

“People are worried about heating their homes and feeding their families. The Tory response? Boost banker bonuses, protect the massive profits of energy companies, and crank up the sanctions on benefit entitlements while you’re at it.

“The increase in the energy price cap to £2,500 will push thousands into fuel poverty but there is a dearth of targeted support for those at the sharp end of 12 years of UK Government mismanagement.

“We did not vote for any of it. These announcements show that Scotland must be independent of this morally bankrupt UK regime.”
