KOLKATA: On a busy Thursday afternoon, a capacity crowd of 5581 — according to official figures — celebrated the return of the I-League in the Meghalaya capital, albeit after a gap of four years. They filled up the stands at Shillong Sports Association Stadium, the temporary home of Shillong Lajong, as Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium gets a makeover to host not just the second-division games but also to host the Blue Tigers someday.
And the joy among the football-crazy hill dwellers was palpable even as Lajong failed to hold on to their lead and ended the fixture with a 1-1 draw against neighbours NEROCA FC.
