County Durham tech innovator Kromek Group plc has announced a contract worth $800,000 with a US customer.
The Sedgefield business, which develops and manufactures radiation and bio-detection technology solutions, said it has secured a repeat order from the existing client for its D3S ID wearable nuclear radiation ‘dirt bomb’ detector. It said it expects the deliver the detectors, and see their revenue, this financial year.
The D3S ID gamma neutron detector is one of the NETPark company’s key products - a wearable detector designed for first responders, armed forces, border security and other CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear) experts. Unlike a conventional radiation identifier, the D3S is a pocket-sized device and is small and light enough to be wearable and concealable.

It can recognise isotopes and neutrons in seconds and is designed to detect radiological threats like dirty bombs, radioactive contamination, smuggling of radioactive substances and radiation at the scene of an accident or terrorist attack.
The deal comes three weeks after Kromek sealed its new deal with Smiths Detection, the Amercian supplier of security screening equipment, to market and distribute Kromek’s wearable radiation detection and identification solutions in the Middle East and certain key markets in Asia and Australasia. The deal expanded upon an agreement for distribution in North and South American markets.
Following the latest contract win Arnab Basu, CEO of Kromek Group, said: “This repeat order affirms the importance of our nuclear radiation detection technology and the strength of our relationship with our US governmental customers. We are continuing to see heightened interest in our CBRN solutions, particularly from governments, and expect this momentum to be sustained given the ongoing challenges in the geopolitical environment.”
