King Charles grimaces over pen during Coronation after once losing cool over leaky item

King Charles' Coronation is taking place at Westminster Abbey today, and as part of the service, His Majesty was called upon to sign the oath with his trusty fountain pen.

But it seems as though his pen wasn't working as intended during the important service, as he could be seen grimacing as he placed the lid back on top of the stationery item.

The monarch is known to carry his own pen for when he is frequently asked to sign visitors' books during royal visits, but it seems the item has been letting him down lately, as he was unable to stop his frustration from showing on his face.

And it isn't the first time King Charles has run into problems with pens either, as he previously gained attention on social media when he became agitated at a leaky fountain pen during a visit to Belfast last year.

Speaking in frustration as he handed the pen to his wife, Queen Camilla, he said: "Oh god I hate this [pen]!", to which Camilla responded: "Oh look, it's going everywhere."

The King managed to wipe his fingers clean but was still frustrated with the inconvenience the pen had caused, as he seemed to indicate the writing utensil has a history of getting in the way.

He said as he walked away: "I can't bear this bloody thing ... every stinking time!"

It wasn't just the pen that prevented the signing ceremony from being smooth sailing either, as it was also reported that when completing the signing of documents on Tuesday, he also wrote the wrong date before checking with an aide, who informed him it was September 13, not September 12.

What's more, the leaky pen incident came just days after he was left irked by a pen tray while attempting to sign official declarations on becoming King during his meeting with the Accession Council.

His Majesty sat down to sign the official documents but found that the tray of pens that had been left on the table was in his way, and he appeared to grimace and push the tray before somebody removed it from the table.

The moment was picked up by many on Twitter with one remarking: "The King not very happy that the pen tray was in his way."

Another noticed: "I think the king didn't want that pen tray there."

While another said: "King Charles really grumpy at the pen tray left on the table."
