The Justice Department has announced criminal charges against 455 individuals following a two-week nationwide crackdown on healthcare fraud, uncovering schemes that collectively sought over $6.5 billion in false claims from insurers.
Among those indicted are a nurse practitioner in Texas accused of billing Medicare for medically unnecessary wound-care procedures, allegedly using the illicit gains for luxury cars and expensive jewelry. Prosecutors also charged a mental health company owner for reportedly targeting homeless individuals, billing for crisis stabilization services they never received. Another case involves a hospice owner who allegedly paid kickbacks to a funeral home employee for information about deceased Medicare beneficiaries.
