Kim Kardashian's Spartan Living Room Proves White Isn't One-Dimensional – It's Polarizing

Kim kardashian wearing white.

Ironically, white might be the most divisive color palette. Though the shade itself is quite neutral, presented with an all-white space, most people will either absolutely love or hate it. Therein lies its magic.

Kim Kardashian has never been afraid of a little controversy, and, accordingly, her all-white living room might be one of the most polarizing spaces on the internet. The actress's ultra-minimalist Hidden Hills mansion was designed by the acclaimed Belgian designer Axel Vervoordt, who worked with Kim from 2014 to 2019 to transform the large family home into a clean, futuristic abode she has called her 'minimalist monastery.' Nearly every item in the home is stark white, causing commenters on every social media post about the home to wax poetic about their feelings – either wholly positively or negatively.

The most popular criticism leveraged against Kim's method of decorating with white is that it's 'boring'; however, the emotional pitch of the reactions it elicits demonstrates exactly the opposite. No matter the year, people are fascinated by an all-white room.

This emotional reaction helps to explain an interesting paradox in current interior trends. Though minimalism in general is fading from favor with designers in 2026, decorating with white remains consistently popular. In fact, data from paint brand Dulux shows that searches for 'soft white colors' have recently risen by 56%. Though Kim's living room will not be everyone's cup of tea, the stark design will always remain popular with a certain subset of people who will never stop decorating with the clean shade.

For those who love the color, like Kim Kardashian, white holds a certain serenity that no other color can capture. Marianne Shillingford, Creative Director and Color Expert at Dulux Heritage, explains: 'White isn’t one-dimensional - heritage-led shades with nuanced undertones and layered finishes can make spaces feel calmer, more inviting and effortlessly sophisticated.'

So, what's the secret to why Kim's living room looks so striking? For one, she has opted for all bright, cool whites creating a tranquil, almost clinical environment.

Marianne explains: 'The key to decorating with white successfully is understanding the undertones of a white. Cooler whites contain hints of gray, blue and green so they can feel fresh and airy, while warmer whites contain hints of pink, gold and yellow which create a gently cocooning and comforting atmosphere.'

If you are hoping to emulate Kim's style with an all-white room, mixing different shades tends to feel a bit more approachable and achievable in any house. 'One of the biggest misconceptions about white interiors is that everything has to match perfectly,' says Marianne. 'In reality, layering different whites and soft neutrals creates depth and interest within a room.'

This kind of layering aligns with interior design trends in our post-minimalist era. Marianne advises: 'There’s been a real shift away from ultra-bright modern whites towards shades that feel more natural and liveable. People want homes that feel relaxed and comforting while still looking elevated, and this palette of whites achieves that beautifully because they change subtly throughout the day depending on the light. It’s about creating softness, warmth and atmosphere.'

Love it or hate it, Kim Kardashian's all-white living room proves the enduring power of the bright hue. It shows that no matter the year, or the style, there is always room to incorporate white in a home.
