Kate Garraway reveals Prince William's kind comment about husband Derek Draper

Kate Garraway shares the sweet comment Prince William made about her husband Derek Draper as she was awarded an MBE.

The Good Morning Britain star, 56, was supported by her husband as she was awarded the honour for her services to broadcasting, journalism and to charity.

Kate's husband Derek – whose life changed after he contracted Covid-19 at the start of the lockdown – was seen proudly watching the special moment in the lavish room.

A clip of her receiving the accolade was shared on Good Morning Britain and Kate opened up about the brief conversation between her and the Prince of Wales.

Referring to her family in the back of the room, co-host Ben Shephard exclaimed: "Ah look at them all in the back shot."

Kate answered: "Ah I know, Derek burst into tears. The Prince of Wales said, 'How's Derek?', and I said, 'He's here'."

She went on to say Prince William wanted to speak to Derek in person but wasn't allowed to due to protocol.

"He said he wants to go over but he's not allowed to leave the rug, there's a very fancy gold carpet that he stands on," she told her co-host.

"So we turned and saw and then obviously Derek was very tearful and then spoke about Jake [Derek's carer] and gave Jake a wave as well.

"You get presented by the lovely Prince of Wales and then as you go outside they take it off you and put it in a box.

"And I said, 'Oh am I not allowed to wear this?', and they said, 'Well there is a card inside which tells you the specific occasions you are supposed to wear it', which I have lost! I have lost it already."

The TV presenter said many people approached Derek to tell him that he's given their family a lot of hope.

"Because they are dealing with things from Covid but also other things like cancer which are difficult. So I think he got a huge amount from it as well, which was very, very lovely," she added.

Kate was made an MBE in the New Year's Honours list.

Reacting to the news in January, Kate said: "I actually feel very awkward about it all really, I don't know why, because I'm thrilled to bits and incredibly honoured.

"But you just sort of think, 'What? Me?' And then you think it's not real."
