Vice President Kamala Harris’ Caribbean roots are gaining attention as she becomes more familiar to the American public following her recent elevation to the top of the Democratic ticket. Her Republican opponent, former President Donald Trump, has raised questions about her Black identity as they compete for support among African American voters in key states like Michigan and Georgia.
Trump's comments at a gathering of Black journalists last month, where he questioned whether Harris is Indian or Black, were widely criticized. Harris, in fact, has a mixed heritage - her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, is Indian-born, and her father, Donald Harris, is Jamaican-born.
Donald Harris comes from a long line of family members in Brown’s Town, a market town in St. Ann Parish, Jamaica. Harris proudly acknowledges her roots in this town, which holds a special place in her heart.
Reflecting on her connection to Brown’s Town, Harris’s cousin Sherman Harris, who resides there, expressed deep emotions, saying, “Even talking to you now, I feel some sort of tears from my eyes too, you know.”
