Jesse Marsch system bringing back 'old memories' for Leeds United winger Jack Harrison

Leeds United winger Jack Harrison says the change in system under new manager Jesse Marsch is bringing back memories of playing football as a youngster.

Marsch took charge of his first game since arriving at the club last weekend as the Whites were defeated 1-0 by Leicester City.

Instead of the familiar 4-1-4-1 that was utilised so often under former boss Marcelo Bielsa, Leeds operated in a 4-2-2-2 system.

That means that the two in behind the strikers – Harrison and Raphinha – were tasked with playing a little narrower, rather than as out and out wingers.

Harrison was heavily involved in a lot of Leeds attacks and showed signs of promise that the system could suit his attributes well.

In an interview with BBC Radio Leeds, Harrison is looking forward to getting to grips with Marsch’s tactics more and more, as well as rekindling some childhood memories.

He said: “When he came in, the sporting director Victor said it perfectly, he’s the perfect man for the job with all of his characteristics and what he brings as a manager and a person - I think it’s exactly what we need in this moment.

“With the change in formation and the change in tactics, I’ve been asked to play in a little bit of a different role - which I am excited about. I grew up playing in a more central role as a number 10 so bringing back some old memories from when I was a kid is nice.

“I really enjoy playing in that system and I’m hoping to see a more improved Jack Harrison, score more goals and have more impact on games but at the same time continue that work ethic and determination defensively to get the job done.

“I’m excited to see what’s going to happen, I’ve got a good relationship with Jesse and I’m really excited to be working with him.”
