Jermain Defoe is set to pull on the Rangers jersey one more time as part of a star-studded Ibrox heroes XI that will face a legends team.
A Rangers Legends side meet a World XI outfit captained by Robin Van Persie on March 26th 2023 after a successful first Weekend of Legends earlier this year. Defoe retired from football in March after a short stint at Sunderland but he is held in high regard by the Light Blues after helping them win the Premiership title in 2021, now a club ambassador and academy coach at former club Tottenham.
Barry Ferguson will captain the Rangers heroes squad which will also include Sasa Papac, Kris Boyd and Michael Mols. Robbie Fowler will line up alongside Dutch legend Van Persie while Jaap Staam, Joe Cole, Michael Essien plus many more form the big name opposition at Ibrox. Defoe said: “I’m really looking forward to getting my boots back on and running back out in front of the Rangers fans. I can’t wait to see you all again.”
Record Sport columnist Ferguson can't wait for the occasion: “Everyone knows how much I love the club so to have the opportunity to lead the Rangers Legends team as captain is an honour and I can’t wait to play again in front of the fans.”
Boyd meanwhile is hopeful of a fine day out for all involved: “It will be a fantastic occasion that will bring together the Rangers family. Ibrox is a special place and Rangers is a special club and the players can’t wait to show their appreciation to the fans who have backed them over the years.”
